One editor who has bought several of my essays is she who works for Notre Dame Magazine. When I first submitted an essay -- which I titled "Suffer Not a Woman" -- she responded, "Close, but not quite there."
Not one to give up, I worked on it. For a year. For perhaps even eighteen months. Now it is in the Winter issue of Notre Dame Magazine, under the expanded title of "I Suffer Not a Woman to Teach."
It's an essay I like, which I cannot say for all of my published work. I wrote the piece while the incident was fresh in my mind, but, as the editor noted, it was quite "there," and so it took me those long months to understand my truth of what had happened that sunny Sunday morning.
